Queensmead Primary in Leicestershire poised to become an academy

September 4, 2012 by Education News Pipe

Queensmead Primary, in Braunstone, have decided that the school will break away from city council control with the help of Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust, of Nottingham.

They hope the process will be complete by October 1.

The Queensmead Primary school, which was given a notice to improve in May, was among a handful in the city told it could be forced to become an academy by the Government if results did not improve.

However, head teacher of Queensmead Primary Andrew Clarke welcomed the support he would receive from the academy’s sponsors in the day-to-day running of the Queensmead Primary school.

“Staff and parents have come on board. They know we have the best interests of the children at heart. Preliminary results in reading, writing and maths indicate our key stage two results this year have gone up or are in line with national levels and if that’s the case we hope to build on that even further when we become an academy.”

Barry Day, a former teacher in the city, is chief executive of the trust, which will provide payroll, staffing, catering, finance and procurement support.

An executive head teacher from an outstanding school will work alongside Mr Clarke. Leaders of Leicester’s branch of the National Union of Teachers have opposed conversion.

They said far from providing greater freedom, Queensmead Primary school would be “micro-managed”.
